One of the most exciting and stressful events in a person's life is moving to a new home. It ranks up there with other major life changes such as getting married, having a baby, and getting a new job. All of these can be considered good forms of stress, but they are stress nonetheless. One of the best ways to limit the stress level, and benefit from other positive effects when it comes to moving into a new home, is to de-clutter your current place of residence well in advance of moving day. There are a number of things you can do to de-clutter your home prior to moving. A few of them are listed here.

Get Organized

As the old quote pertaining to neatness states, "A place for everything, and everything in its place."  This is important to keep in mind while de-cluttering your home. There are two basic categories to consider when moving. There are the things that are going to the new house, and there are those things going to the curb. Once the decision has been made on which things are going to each pile, make sure the pile going to the curb, gets to the curb. The Curb per say, is simply whatever way one might choose to dispose of the pile not making the move to the new house. This could mean having a garage sale, taking the items to a flea market, renting a haul-away dumpster or even making a trip to the local landfill. Regardless of how you opt to get rid of your excess belongings, by being proactive before moving day you will make your place much more appealing to buyers as well as accessible for movers.

Don't Stop at De-Cluttering the Junk

Anything that you do not need can be packed up for the move. There is nothing worse than showing up to help someone move only to find they are still packing boxes. Not having everything boxed up and ready to go at the start of move means there is generally stuff on counters and tables, or for the sake of this argument, clutter. There are likely many things in your home that you do not use on a regular basis, such as seasonal items, decorations, excess furniture, and so on. Having everything boxed up and labeled with the appropriate room it will be going to in the new house will streamline the moving process, help to de-clutter one's current home, and greatly reduce the stress of the day.

Improved Aesthetic Appeal

The buyer's of your current home will likely want to do a final walk-thru of the property prior to taking possession of the home. Because of buyer protection laws, buyer's can opt to bow out of the process if something seems amiss. In the instances of cluttered homes, it may make or break that decision. By de-cluttering one's home prior to moving, it makes the home appear more inviting and is more likely to re-instill in the buyer's mind that they made the right decision.

In closing, whereas moving is a stressful experience, by de-cluttering your home prior to moving, a lot of this stress can easily be mitigated making moving day a breeze instead of a chore.  It will also make things easier when it comes to the staging process as you'll be able to move furniture around and paint walls with less clutter in your way.
